According to semiconductor research firm IC Insights, the global pure wafer foundry market will increase by $4.2 billion in 2018, 90% of which will come from China.
The report pointed out that China's fabless semiconductors have sprung up, driving demand for foundry services in the region. Last year, China's foundry revenue jumped 26% to $7.5 billion, almost three times the global average (9%), and this year's growth is even more explosive.
According to the report, China's pure-film foundry revenue is expected to increase by 51% this year, accounting for a global share of 5 percentage points, becoming 19%, ranking first in the Asia-Pacific region.
The report is optimistic that the main wafer foundry's China revenue will have double-digit growth this year, and TSMC (2330) will be the biggest winner by benefiting from virtual currency-related equipment demand.
TSMC's wafer foundry revenue jumped 44% last year, and this year's estimate is expected to soar by 79% to 6.7 billion US dollars, accounting for 19% of TSMC's overall revenue, more than double the 2016 9%.
